Copium: In The Voidscape interrogates the emotional tension of existing under constant digital surveillance through diasporic experience and quantum metaphysics. Using real-time body tracking technologies and TouchDesigner, the work captures movements as the artist / performer's body morphs, becomes simultaneously hypervisible and ethereal through stark white outlines against void-like blackness. The aesthetic of surveillance is subverted through glitch-like imagery that fragments and reconstitutes the human form, reflecting the psychological strain of being perpetually observed.
A soundscape of manipulated NASA sonification data and field recordings creates a haunting continuum between cosmic and terrestrial frequencies, supporting an exploration of different modes of watching - from the cold gaze of algorithmic surveillance to the protective vigilance of the Orisa. The narration interweaves African spirituality with contemporary digital coping mechanisms ("copium"), expressing both ancestral comfort and digital anxiety, while real-time processing and noise functions add crucial indeterminacy, embodying the struggle for agency within systems of observation.
