WATERS OF REBIRTH

Waters of Rebirth is a multisensory project that references the Awankere festival of the Okere community in Warri, which has been ongoing since 1497. This immersive project questions the future of our intangible cultural heritage amidst climate change and cultural neglect. The experience includes photography, sound collage and augmented reality, a speculative AI short film exploring a possible future of the festival after a catastrophic flood and a beaded installation depicting the new landscape. Waters of Rebirth serves as a compelling call to action, urging communities to preserve and adapt cultural practices that have defined our communities for centuries in the face of modern challenges.

The project was curated by Chinyere Obieze and created by Okwudini Noah Misan, Ugonna Ibe, Kiel Orji, Tope Asokere, and Sigil, as part of the Dreaming New Worlds initiative, supported by funding from the Goethe-Institut.
